About
What if a social network didn't take advantage of users? Satellite.earth is an open-source, universal social platform where all data is exportable and users hold the keys to their online identity.
Problems & Insights
Making a platform where the login system is decentralized, the data is hosted on a peer-to-peer network, and all the connections between users are visible in real-time was quite a challenge. It was essential that all these technologies be harmonized through the power of design in order to create an up-to-par user experience that didn't make any sacrifices for the technology chosen.
Visual Identity
'Retro Space' is the term I used when designing Satellite - think '2001 Space Odyssey'. A lot of thought went into making sure the fonts and exact shades of black and white chosen maximized readability to help users navigate through long posts on a dark background.
What I learned
Brand is more than just pretty colors and fonts. Brand needs to express the overall feeling and tone the company holds - It's essential that the tone set by the brand is cohesive when viewing the company through an internal and external lens.
